How to Power Cycle Your Modem or Router
Sometimes, your internet just needs a quick power nap.
If your connection’s feeling sluggish, acting up, or not working at all, the first and easiest thing to try is a power cycle. It sounds simple—but it genuinely fixes a huge chunk of internet issues.
To avoid calling in and having to answer “No?” to our first question (the classic, “have you tried turning it off and on again?”), here’s how to give your modem and router a clean restart and clear out any digital cobwebs.
Step 1: Switch Everything Off 📴
Turn off your modem and router. If you have a separate NBN connection box (common with FTTP or FTTC setups), switch that off too.
Step 2: Unplug From Power 🔌
Physically unplug your modem, router, and NBN box (if you have one) from the wall. No sneaky standby mode—pull the plug completely.
Step 3: Wait for 60 Seconds ⏱️
Give it a full minute. This allows all devices to fully power down, clear any cached memory, and reset properly.
Step 4: Reconnect the Modem (or NBN Box) First 🌐
Plug your modem or NBN connection box back in and wait about 2–3 minutes. Keep an eye on the lights—they should go steady, especially the "Internet" or "Online" indicator.
Step 5: Reconnect the Router (if separate) 📶
Now plug in your router (if it’s a separate device). Wait another 1–2 minutes for it to boot up and reconnect.
Step 6: Test It Out 🚀
Try loading a website or running a speed test to check if you’re back online. If everything’s working again—great! You’ve just done your own little network reset.
