Boosting your nbn™ Performance

NBN

Small changes, faster speeds, and fewer “why won’t this load?!” moments.

Let’s be honest—nothing ruins a good night of streaming or a smooth Zoom meeting like slow internet. But before you start blaming your nbn™ plan or threatening your modem, take a breath. The speed and performance of your connection can be influenced by how your home network is set up—and how you use it.

Here are a few easy ways to get the most out of your nbn connection, straight from the tech-savvy team here at Bendigo Telco.

🔍 Check Your Wi-Fi Setup

If your Wi-Fi signal feels more “meh” than mighty, it could come down to where your modem/router is hanging out. A few tweaks can make a big difference:

  • Location matters – Try placing your router in a central, open spot in your home. Avoid hiding it in cupboards or tucking it behind thick walls, ductwork, or even big fish tanks (yep, water messes with signal too).

  • Think vertically – Routers love a bit of elevation. If it’s on the floor, try moving it up onto a shelf.

  • Expand your range – Big house or thick walls? A Wi-Fi extender can help cover more ground and keep your connection strong throughout your home.

  • Go wired for speed – For devices that need max performance (like your gaming console, work laptop or smart TV), plug in directly with an Ethernet cable. It’s the most stable and speedy option available.

📱 Too Many Devices Slowing You Down?

Your internet connection is shared across everything that’s connected—phones, laptops, tablets, smart TVs, smart fridges (yes, those exist), and more. The more devices fighting for bandwidth, the more likely you’ll feel a slowdown.

Try this:

  • Disconnect what you don’t need – Switch off, unplug or disconnect devices you're not using.

  • Do a quick test – Turn off devices one at a time to see if performance improves. If one device seems to be dragging the whole network down, it might be outdated or even carrying a virus.

  • Update your gear – Old modems, routers or devices can become bottlenecks. If yours is a few years old, it might be time for an upgrade.
